Summer time and Summer jobs!

by TEFL Mama - 06:26 on 19 February 2009

Well it's that time of year again believe it or not!  Yep, it's time to start deciding where you are going to spend the Summer if you're a TEFL teacher abroad.

Hard to believe, I know, but the jobs are out there on TEFL.com, Summer Camp websites are being dusted down and, this year, Universities are knocking on our door to see what Summer work, or placements as they keep calling them, we have available abroad...

I seem to be spending a large proportion of the day at the moment fielding enquiries regarding requests for work in Spain this Summer.  Unfortunately what we can help with is regular year round contracts starting in September.  For Summer Camp work you need to generally have a couple of years experience.  The courses there are very intensive, they charge customers a premium and they want peopl with experience to provide the teaching.

Fortunately for many, Summer work in the UK is frequently the opposite. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of jobs available for varying lengths over the Summer, the length and breadth of Britain, well to Perth at least!  This is where many first-time TEFL teachers cut their teeth before going onto work in Asia, Europe, South America - in fact all over the world.

Working in Summer schools in the UK really is a case of being thrown in at the deep end. You either sink or swim.  If you do manage to survive it will stand you in good stead for your future move abroad.  If it all goes drastically wrong...well at least it's not far to get home!
